Previous Volunteers of the Month Volunteers of the Month: San Francisco for Democracy's Dean Corps You will see a lot about the Dean Corps's recent activities on this website and can find its upcoming activities on the Calendar. But what is Dean Corps? First, it is based on the philosophy that there are two ways to change the world:
San Francisco for Dean founded Dean Corps SF in July 2003 in response to Howard Dean's request that his campaign supporters be of service to their communities. Terese Lawler has been our primary Dean Corps organizer from the start, recruiting volunteers and working with nonprofit groups to improve the quality of life for all San Franciscans. Other organizers and volunteers have included Olivia Garcia, Nancy Rosenthal, Alane Bowling, Jay Lasnik, Stephanie Linder, Will Carsten. Nancy Rosenthal, Susan Pfeifer, Mayumi Zelechoski, Helen VanBenschoten, Leon Parker, Constance McKee, Suzanne Cowan, Beth Mosley, David Schimdt, Jeff Whittington, Mark Bozlet, and Maureen Letton Since its inception, Dean Corps has participated in many community efforts:
Dean Corps was featured in the Volunteer Spotlight section of the Summer 2005 Community Catalyst-the newsletter of the SF Recreation and Parks Department. Currently, Dean Corps is active at least one Saturday every month. If you are interested in volunteering (or organizing), contact Alane at alane_bowling@hotmail.com or Terese at tereselawler@yahoo.com. Jeff Whittington - September 2005 Congratulations and thank you for being our September Volunteer of the Month! We are delighted that you've taken on the job of yahoo group moderator. Thanks for all your hard work and dedication on the Clean Money campaign, outreach, Dean Corps, etc. as well. We truly appreciate all you do to promote democracy. Mimi LaPointe - August 2005 Congratulations and THANK YOU to Mimi (Michelle) LaPointe, our August Volunteer of the Month. Since Gov. Dean's primary campaign, Mimi has been a strong asset to our local group as well as Women for Dean. Earlier this year, Mimi worked on our strategic planning process. Mimi's expertise in women's, children's, and educational issues has been a valuable resource to our political affairs committee. We also honor Mimi's community activism and participation in numerous outreach and Dean Corps events. Steph Feiring - July 2005
Nolan Treadway - May 2005
As an all-volunteer organization, San Francisco for Democracy recognizes the efforts of an individual volunteer each month. For May, we honor Nolan Treadway. Nolan has engaged at every level of the organization, from checking in people at Meetups to researching Social Security policy and working to thwart the governor’s attack on democracy in projects to stop the potential special election. His commitment to political participation, at all levels of government, reflects the civic values of San Francisco for Democracy and its volunteer-based spirit of advocacy. Thank you Nolan! Jim Cowan - April 2005
Jim Cowan Each month, San Francisco for Democracy highlights and honors a volunteer. Our April Volunteer of the Month is Jim Cowan. From registering voters to creating and editing our monthly e-newsletter, the People-Powered Paper, Jim has been a very active volunteer. We value his commitment to keeping our members informed and connected. And we thank Jim for taking leadership as coordinator on the communications committee and participant in our strategic planning process. Thank you Jim! -- Stephanie Linder, Communications Director
Joni Eisen - March 2005
Joni Eisen taking calls with DeanCorps at the KQED pledge drive. Joni Eisen is our Volunteer of the Month for March. Joni has been a member of SF for Democracy almost from the start. She is a conscientious citizen of San Francisco who practices what she preaches and sticks to her convictions. She’s a strong proponent of environmental protection and rides a bike whenever possible. Last year she volunteered with us at the Ferry Plaza registering voters and she even traveled to Florida to help get out the vote. Joni is particularly active in Dean Corps and has volunteered for KQED Pledge Drives and at the SF Food Bank. One of Joni's passions is cleaning up elections and she has helped educate our members about the California Clean Money Campaign. We are very proud to have Joni as a part of SF for Democracy. Thank you Joni!
Leon Parker - February 2005 ![]() Leon Parker at the January San Francisco for Democracy Party Hard-working, talented and modest, Leon has made a big contribution to the membership committee, both as a letter writer for the membership renewal drive and as a host for our volunteer appreciation party. His talents include cooking, gardening (he helped with Dean Corp's first native planting event) and writing endorsement letters for Dean. Leon actually got responses back from some of those DNC members he wrote to last month! Because of his willingness jump in wherever there is a need, Leon has earned the honor of Volunteer of the Month. "I must share the credit with my very patient wife, Gloria Wu, who makes my participation possible by singlehandedly taking care of our energetic two-year old son Dylan while I'm otherwise preoccupied and by helping me to solve the mysteries of MS Word "mail merge" and other technological challenges. She also pitched in to help shop and prepare salads for the Membership party. She and I met eight years ago while volunteering at the SF Food Bank, so it's been particularly special to be able to get back there again with Dean Corps!"
John Trinkl - December 2004 Each month, we recognize a SF for Democracy member for his or her volunteerism. The December Volunteer of the Month is John Trinkl. Currently, John is one of our talented web coordinators who keeps our Web site up-to-date with fresh content and timely announcements. During the primaries, John was a tireless volunteer, registering voters and coordinating canvassing. His calm, thoughtful manner and political insights are a great asset to our organization. THANK YOU JOHN!
Tim Hsu - November 2004 Since he first became active with San Francisco for Dean in June, 2003, Tim Hsu has volunteered his time and efforts in a variety of ways. When he’s not spending time with his teaching job at San Jose State, Tim has proposed and often coordinated a wide range of volunteer activities, including visibility for immigrant workers, outreach to unions and merchant walking during the primary season. In addition to these special activities, Tim frequently helps with intake at the Meetups, and is an active member of the membership and communications committee. Because of his continued commitment to our shared goals and values, Tim truly deserves the designation of "Volunteer of the Month."
Terese Lawler - October 2004
Terese Lawler (fifth from right) with other members of San Francisco for Democracy. As a volunteer organization, San Francisco for Democracy recognizes an outstanding volunteer each month. Our October Volunteer of the Month is Terese Lawler. Terese's warm and open personality and contagious enthusiasm has brought us many new volunteers. Whether it's exchanging ideas, thoughts on current political events, or just pushing food trays along, you know you're in the presence of a remarkable woman when you work with Terese. Well over a year ago, Terese started our local Dean Corps with meal service at Glide and has been volunteering there ever since. She's also led our coastal clean-up efforts, registered hundreds of new voters, helped Turn Nevada Blue, and currently helps out Shawn Reifsteck, our endorsed Supervisor candidate in her district. THANK YOU TERESE!
Susan Pfeifer - September 2004
Susan Pfeifer (center in red shirt) with some of the other founding members of San Francisco for Democracy. As a volunteer organization, we recognize those who make outstanding contributions to our mission. This month's volunteer is Susan Pfeifer. Susan has been active with Dean Corps, voter registration, and pitching media stories. She was also an active participant in the endorsement process and helped with the reorganization. THANK YOU SUSAN!
Alane Bowling - August 2004
Super volunteer Alane Bowling doing voter registration. As a volunteer organization, we recognize those who make outstanding contribution to our cause. The August Volunteer of the Month is...Alane Bowling. Alane not only started the Ferry Plaza tabling for voter registration and keeps it going week after week after week, but also volunteers with America Coming Together (ACT) as their Northern California volunteer organizer, organizing the Reno road trips to help "Turn Nevada Blue," and still manages to maintain her cool! Alane has also hosted many Dean and Kerry Meetups. Thank you Alane!

Sept 3 Meetup:
Quote of the Day:
"I love my church, and I'm a Catholic who was raised by intellectuals who were very devout. I was raised to believe that you could question the church and still be a Catholic. What is worthy of satire is the misuse of religion for destructive or political gains. That's totally different from the Word, the blood, the body, and the Christ. His kingdom is not of this earth." - Stephen Colbert Working Groups SF for Democracy's Five Strategic Issues
